On November 26, 2025, my friend Rob and I attended Grace Broadway’s Thanksgiving service at 6:00 p.m. The mass was held in the chapel, which was quite lovely and included the Holy Eucharist, classic Thanksgiving hymns, and a meaningful homily.
One of the hymns we sang was “We Plow the Fields,” which beautifully expresses gratitude for the gifts of the harvest. The lyrics reminded me, “All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. Then, thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for His Love.” I felt a great deal of warmth and excitement while singing this hymn, which made me think of life’s seasons and the blessings from above. This served as a reminder of how divine and selfless Christ’s Love is.
Now, as we move beyond Thanksgiving season, we enter the Advent season. “Advent” is derived from the Latin “adventus,” which means “coming” or “arrival.” Purple, violet, or occasionally blue are the liturgical colors used during this season, which signifies the start of the church calendar. Blue represents Hope and expectation, whereas purple/violet denotes preparation and penitence.
Advent is a time for us to prepare our hearts and minds to welcome Jesus, the Christ. I cherish this season deeply; for me, Advent signifies adventure—a journey of self-exploration and faith renewal. Just as faith can become dull without renewal, Advent fills me with Hope that the light of the world will come and dwell among us.
The Advent season consists of four weeks, each represented by a candle. The first week symbolizes Hope, represented by the Prophecy Candle, which is purple. The second week represents Peace, symbolized by the Bethlehem Candle, also purple. The third week, Joy, is defined by the pink Shepherd’s Candle. Finally, the fourth week signifies Love, represented by the purple Angel’s Candle. Sometimes, one candle is placed in the center, lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, representing Christ Jesus. These candles remind me of the essential virtues of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love that we are called to practice as Christians. As we embark on this Advent journey, may we possess these essential virtues within us.
Thus, friends, may we extend a warm welcome to everyone we encounter, make amends with those we must, and maintain Hope in the face of adversity. Let’s practice Love in a way that demonstrates empathy and concern for others. Together with our community, let’s share Love and humor while reminding people of the beauty all around us. May we encourage others through acts of service, words of affirmation, and gestures of kindness. May we be a source of Peace and light in the world. Let us shine brightly like these Advent candles in a world that often feels dark, bringing light to those who are lost or weary. Together, we create a community that reflects the heart of Christ, welcoming all and embodying the spirit of this holy season. Amen!
