When puppies happen…

Dear Friends,

Last week, I conducted a training session. It was part of a busy and stressful day and one of the participants brought along her doggie, along with a bag carrying one-month old puppies, four of them! There was some mild disruption as she got the mom and pups settled safely away in a corner, and I was distracted and struggled to focus on my presentation, to answer questions, elaborate on stuff, you know — try to appear like I was totally in the moment while a dog nursing four puppies was just over there.

Once class was over, I sat back and said  “Now hand me one of those puppies!” My whole demeanor changed, pretty sure my BP lowered, I felt kinder and softer. I felt like I was who I needed to be.

Same seems to happen holding a baby. Sure, the exception might be a screaming baby, but the very act of attempting to soothe can be a good thing.

And it’s not just the littles, but all creatures great and small. We have those times when we are holding and comforting a creature larger than ourselves.

My God is not a wrathful God, but a calm and comforting God. My God is a low blood pressured entity. My God is love. Can it be that we are our most godly when we show love? I think that’s true. Can it be that the endorphins we experience when we love is tied to our godly DNA?

Being loved, receiving comfort, being soothed is a good feeling. But the giving of those things is so much more. We all experience this, perhaps you just never realized, but the next “nurturing” situation you find yourself in, however great or small, take particular notice of how you’re feeling, and experience the godliness of that moment.

Giving some love to that puppy changed my day. In our painful, chaotic world, we can’t afford letting any moments go by that we could have loved. It’s our God DNA and nothing (and I do mean nothing!) can take that connection away from us.

Wishing you all the awareness of the love of God we carry within us, and the spirit to let that love loose! And, Happy Mother’s Day to all who love.

Deacon Denise

P.S. No, I’m not keeping the puppy.
