I see May is a month filled with celebration and recognition, honoring not only the contributions of workers and labor movements but also the invaluable roles played by mothers, healthcare workers, and graduates. It’s a time to reflect on the profound impact that these individuals have on our lives and society as a whole.
I want to take a moment to recognize and appreciate all mothers, who embody the essence of selflessness and unconditional love. Being a mother transcends biological ties; it encompasses spiritual mothers, mentor figures, nurturing educators, and so on. My own mother has been a guiding light in my life, exemplifying strength, resilience, and unwavering support. A mother cares for her children without expecting anything in return, and this is the true essence of unconditional love.
The role of a mother is sacred and multifaceted. In many ways, the Church can also be seen as a mother, nurturing and guiding its congregation. The classic hymn “The Church’s One Foundation” (Hymn 525 from the 1982 hymnal) beautifully illustrates this concept, referring to the Church in the feminine form and emphasizing her role as a protector and nurturer of faith:
The Church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is his new creation,
By water and the word.
This hymn serves as a reminder of the Church’s mission to nurture believers, provide spiritual guidance, and create a sense of belonging. Just as a mother nurtures her children, the Church nurtures its members, helping them grow in faith and love.
Throughout the Bible and in society, the role of mothers has been tremendous. They have been the backbone of families and communities, shaping the next generation of leaders and visionaries. Mother Mary, for instance, exemplified profound love and devotion, nurturing Jesus with unwavering faith and strength. Her example serves as a reminder of the power of maternal love and the significant influence mothers have in our spiritual and moral development.
In celebrating mothers this May, let us also acknowledge the countless sacrifices they make and the lessons they impart. Their mentorship and guidance have the power to inspire greatness, instilling values that resonate through generations. As we honor mothers, let us commit to recognizing their contributions not just in May, but every day of the year. Their love and dedication deserve our deepest gratitude and respect.
