DAYS AFTER PALM SUNDAY

Monday, March 17

12:15 pm  Holy Eucharist

Tuesday, March 18

12:15 pm  Holy Eucharist

Wednesday, March 19

12:15 pm  Holy Eucharist

6:30 pm  Holy Eucharist with homily

On Palm Sunday, we join Christ in his journey towards the cross.  His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, with waving palms and cheers of “Hosanna,” is quickly contrasted with the cries of “Crucify him” that the congregation voices during the reading of the Passion.

MAUNDY THURSDAY

Thursday, March 20

12:15 pm  Holy Eucharist

6:30 pm  Holy Eucharist with Hymns and

                Stripping of the Altar

                 Organ Music of Messiaen.

                 Homily by the Rector.

Followed by a Vigil until 10:00 pm; email

     amanda@churchoftheincarnation.org, to sign

     up for the vigil.

At a Passover meal, Jesus institutes the Eucharist, “Do this in remembrance of me,” and demonstrates the command (Latin “mandatum,” hence Maundy) to love one another by humbly washing the feet of his disciples.  The church celebrates the final Eucharist until Easter (Communion on Good Friday is distributed from the reserved Sacrament) and, in a foreshadowing of Jesus’ betrayal and abandonment, the altar is stripped of all its ornaments and linens.

After His Last Supper, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray and asked that his companions keep awake and keep watch with him.  Likewise, we hold a vigil after the service and try to keep watch with Christ.

              Communion

               Followed by a Reception.

The Women’s Group gathers in the tradition and example of Jesus’ earliest female disciples who waited outside the tomb for the Sabbath to end so that they could properly anoint Christ’s body for burial.  The evening vigil is the first service of Easter.
