E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 30, 2007 –

JANUARY 6, 2008

On January 1, eight days after Christ’s birth, the church celebrates the Holy Name of Jesus.  The name Jesus is an anglicized form of the late Latin Iesus, which itself is derived from the Greek IesousIesous was the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew name Yeshua or Yehoshua, which is translated Joshua and means “God saves.”  The first of January is alternately recognized as the Circumcision of Christ.

The Circumcision, by Signorelli

Eternal Father, who gave to your incarnate Son the holy name of Jesus to be the sign of our salvation: Plant in every heart, we pray, the love of him who is the Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.  Amen.
