E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 11 –

NOVEMBER 18, 2007

This Wednesday, the church remembers the consecration of Samuel Seabury, Bishop (1784).  Seabury's consecration established the American episcopate.  During the colonial period, persons seeking ordination had to travel to England to be ordained by a bishop in apostolic succession.  Once independence had been won, Anglicans in the newly-formed United States began debating the structure of the Church and the value of having their own local bishops.  Seabury would be their first.  He was not consecrated in England, where he would have had to swear allegiance to the Crown, but in Scotland.

We give you thanks, O Lord our God, for your goodness in bestowing upon this Church the gift of the episcopate, which we celebrate in this remembrance of the consecration of Samuel Seabury; and we pray that, joined together in unity with our bishops, and nourished by your holy Sacraments, we may proclaim the Gospel of redemption with apostolic zeal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
