E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF AUGUST 12 –19, 2007

This week the church remembers Saint Mary the Virgin who, as the Mother of our Lord, played an unparalleled role in salvation history.  She is one of the only two persons, outside of the Trinity, mentioned in the creeds (the other being Pontius Pilate).  Iconography often displays her tenderness toward Christ as a young babe or child, cradled in her arms, but her devotion is also poignantly portrayed in Pietas, depictions of Mary as the Lady of Pity, mourning Jesus' death.  Christian traditions differ in the theology and piety they believe and practice concerning Mary, but all must hold her in high regard for her amazing faith and confidence to be able to respond to the angel Gabriel with the words, 'Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word' (Luke 1:38).

Pietà, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 - 1564)

O God, who have taken to yourself the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of your incarnate Son: Grant that we, who have been redeemed by his blood, may share with her the glory of your eternal kingdom; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
