E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF JUNE 10 – JUNE 17, 2007

This week the church remembers Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941), theologian and mystic.  The following quote on the discipline and labor of spirituality is attributed to her:

"The determined fixing of our will upon God, and pressing toward him steadily and without deflection; this is the very center and the art of prayer. The most theological of thoughts soon becomes inadequate; the most spiritual of emotions is only a fair-weather breeze. Let the ship take advantage of it by all means, but not rely on it. She must be prepared to beat to windward if she would reach her goal."[1]

O God, Origin, Sustainer, and End of all your creatures; Grant that your Church, taught by your servant Evelyn Underhill, guarded evermore by your power, and guided by your Spirit into the light of truth, may continually offer to you all glory and thanksgiving and attain with your saints to the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have promised by our Savior Jesus Christ; who with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen

THIS WEEK AT INCARNATION

Tuesday, June 12:

7:00 pm.  Twenties and Thirties' Drinks and Discussion.  Meet at the Parish House and we'll walk to a local bar.  Topic: "Just War?"  We will discuss how just-war theory has been developed and applied by Christians, and we'll debate its relevance and fulfillment in our nation's current military engagements.  We will also question whether our concern as Christians is solely with warfare, looking at a program entitled "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon" which seeks to enlist churches in the work of caring for soldiers and their families when the soldiers return from combat.  First drink — be it a Coke or a beer — is on the church.
