E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF MAY 27 – JUNE 3, 2007

The 16th century English Reformation produced many hallmarks of the Anglican tradition; foremost among them was Thomas Cranmer’s design of the first Book of Common Prayer in 1549.  The prayer book was inaugurated with its use on Pentecost (June 9, 1549), and the Church now remembers The First Book of Common Prayer on the weekday following Pentecost (this year, Monday, May 28th).

Anglicans and Episcopalians continue to order their personal devotions and corporate worship with Books of Common Prayer.  At Incarnation we use the 1928 Prayer Book during our Sunday 8:30 am service, Rite I and Rite II of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer throughout the week, and Enriching our Worship (supplemental liturgical texts which anticipate the development and publication of a future prayer book) at our Sunday 5 pm service.  These are the Episcopal versions; in each province of the Anglican Communion, indigenous prayer books are assembled.

Much remains constant throughout the development of the prayer book, but each edition endeavors to embody a new theological understanding.  The 1549 Book of Common Prayer Book translated the Latin Mass into the English language to make the prayers “common” – i.e. able to be recited and understood by all.  The Reformation, in England and elsewhere, advocated for use of the vernacular in order to effectively proclaim the Word of God to the People of God.

The title page of the Book of Common Prayer (1549)

“The booke of common prayer and administration of the Sacramentes, and other rites and ceremonies of the Churche: after the --- of the Churche of England.”

In the 1979 Book of Common Prayer (p. 823), we find the following Collect “for those in the Armed Forces of our Country,” which calls to mind those persons whose service may end in the honorable sacrifice of life we remember on Memorial Day:

“Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad.  Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.”
