E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF MAY 13 – MAY 20, 2007

This Thursday, the Church celebrates Ascension Day.  Last year I assisted the Chaplain of an Episcopal Day School in New Haven, CT.  The students, preschool through grade six, were some of the most Biblically-literate people I have met.  One day the Chaplain was speaking of Jesus’ forty days of temptation in the wilderness.  “What other events from the Bible,” she asked, “involved the number forty?”  The kids raised their hands and offered these answers in quick succession: “the number of days of the flood;” “the years the Israelites wandered in the desert;” and “the number of days Jesus spent on earth after the resurrection before he went up to heaven.”  My jaw dropped when a Jewish student offered the last response.  She was right; according to Acts 1:3, Jesus ascended to heaven after forty days of appearing to his disciples and speaking to them about the kingdom of God.  The glorious scene is depicted below.

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THIS WEEK AT INCARNATION

Tuesday, May 15:
        6:00 pm. Camp Board meets.

7:00 pm.
Twenties and Thirties’ Drinks and Discussion will meet at the Parish House and walk to a local bar.  Topic: “Responding to Random Acts of Violence and Senseless Acts of Murder.”  The events at Virginia Tech challenge us to consider, once again, the Christian response to tragedy.  How do we speak of what happened?  How might we use theological terms of sin, evil, hope, and redemption with care and conscientiousness?  This conversation is open to all persons in their twenties and thirties; we welcome newcomers.  First drink – be it a Coke or a beer is on the church
